Masseria wedding Puglia
The advantages of a wedding in a masseria and how I manage the photohoot.
A masseria wedding in Puglia has become a popular choice for couples looking for a unique and unforgettable experience. These beautiful venues allow the entire celebration to take place in one location: from getting ready, to the civil ceremony, from the aperitif with guests to the wedding dinner.
Many couples even rent a masseria for two or three days, hosting pre- or post-wedding celebrations, or simply enjoying some downtime by the pool with friends.
This makes a masseria wedding more than just an event – it becomes a shared experience, almost like a mini getaway. This is especially true for destination weddings, since in this case the couples and their guests travel from other regions or countries.
In this article, I’ll explain how I manage the photoshoot for a masseria wedding in Puglia, and why this type of venue is perfect for capturing stunning, timeless images of your special day.
Groom and bride's getting ready: the magic behind the scenes
The wedding photoshoot begins with the couple’s preparations. Almost always I work alongside a second professional photographer, which allows us to follow both the bride and the groom during their getting ready. For more details, feel free to check my FAQs.
Getting ready in a masseria is a huge advantage: the surroundings are naturally beautiful and provide an incredible backdrop for photos. Imagine, for example, a bride getting her makeup done inside a trullo, or the groom enjoying a quiet moment in a sunlit courtyard.
Some couples choose not to be photographed in this phase, because they prefer to enjoy this intimate moment only with their close family. From my perspective as a destination wedding photographer in Puglia, however, this moment is very interesting. Skipping it can leave a gap in the story of the day. Preparations are filled with emotion and small details that make for truly beautiful reportage shots: a bride hugging her mother, the groom laughing with friends over a glass of prosecco, a tear on the father’s face as he sees his daughter for the first time in her wedding dress. Anyway, I always adapt to the couple’s preferences, ensuring they feel comfortable at all times.
From a photography point of view, one hour—or at most an hour and a half—before the end of the preparations is more than enough to capture this part of the day. After all, the bride may not want photos of herself before her makeup and hair are almost done.

The civil ceremony in a masseria: an authentic Puglia experience
In summer, if it doesn’t rain—which is the case most of the time—the civil ceremony is usually held outdoors. Great attention is given to the setup: the arrangement of chairs for guests, the ceremony table, the floral details.
Some couples choose to hire a wedding planner to ensure everything is perfect, while others manage the ceremony together with the venue and their selected vendors. Either way, involving your photographer at this stage is recommended. Even a small piece of advice from the photographer can make a big difference, especially when it comes to choosing the exact location for the ceremony. For example, imagine if during the ceremony the groom is in the shade while the bride is in full sunlight—it can make photography challenging. Planning ahead helps avoid such situations and ensures beautiful, well-lit images.
A civil ceremony in a masseria offers the chance to experience the true rural charm of Puglia. The natural light in these settings allows the photographer to create stunning, impactful images.
From my perspective as a reportage wedding photographer, the key is to capture the event discreetly, without disturbing the natural flow of the event. Whenever possible, I use telephoto lenses to maintain distance from the ceremony table while still getting intimate and detailed shots.
A small tip I give to all couples: check the sunset time on your wedding day and schedule the ceremony accordingly. Avoid holding it too early, when the sun is high in the sky—it’s harsh for photos and can be very hot in summer. Also, don’t schedule it too late; there should still be enough light for family portraits and the couple’s photo session before it gets dark.

The couple’s photoshoot in a masseria: a perfect setting
Once the ceremony is over, I usually take group photos with the closest family members of both the bride and groom, as well as with the people they consider most important. If possible, I also capture a photo of the couple with all of their guests.
Then comes the couple’s photoshoot. It goes without saying that masserie in Puglia provide the perfect setting for this type of photography. Their wide green spaces, often filled with centuries-old olive trees, and their stunning architecture create ideal backdrops. Just think, for example, of the trulli at Villa Cenci.
I handle this phase very naturally, making sure the couple enjoys themselves, because that’s how truly memorable shots are created. If needed, I offer guidance on using the light in the best way or help couples who feel a bit uneasy in front of the camera.
Usually, 20 to 30 minutes are enough for the couple’s session. Again, I make sure to optimize the time so that the couple can return to their guests as soon as possible.
Regarding timing… the ideal moment for these shots is shortly before sunset, when the sun is lower and the light becomes warm and enveloping. This is what photographers call the “golden hour,” highlighting the beauty of this part of the day.

The wedding dinner and the party in a masseria
Finally, we arrive at the wedding dinner, the party, and, of course, the cake cutting. Even here, the advantages of hosting a wedding in a masseria are clear. Tables are meticulously arranged, floral details are handled by professionals, and the lighting adds a magical touch.
From a photographic point of view, this is the easiest phase for me, because I get to do what I enjoy most: full reportage-style documentation. I don’t need to give any directions to the couple or their guests; I simply follow the natural flow of events.
My photographic style often allows me to fully express my creativity during this part of the wedding day. I frequently use flash to create light effects that add energy and dynamism to the couple and their guests while they dance.
Immediately after the cake cutting, unless there are special requests or prior agreements with the couple, my photography service comes to an end.

Conclusion
In this article, I have tried to explain the advantages—both aesthetic and atmospheric—of having a wedding in a masseria in Puglia. I have also outlined how I manage the different phases of the event, deliberately skipping some details to avoid going too in-depth.
For example, it would have been unnecessary to specify that during the couple’s first dance I try to remain completely unobtrusive whenever possible (in fact, in this case, I usually avoid using flash so as not to disturb the moment). I have also left out other aspects that are fairly easy to understand, such as the fact that hosting the entire wedding in one location avoids uncomfortable transfers and delays.
If your budget allows, a masseria wedding in Puglia is definitely a fantastic choice. It lets you fully enjoy your big day while allowing for a truly high-quality photography experience.
